80 Years Ago, the Federal Government Launched One of the Most Successful Programs in History

Ida May Fuller of Ludlow, Vermont received the first Social Security check, for $22.54, in 1940. By the time she passed away in 1975 at age 100, she had received nearly $23,000 in benefits.

Were it not for Social Security, approximately 44 percent of American seniors would be living in poverty. The program keeps more than 15 million people from destitution.

And somebody wants to do away with that? That’s stupid and callous at the same time.
