Good Ol’ Charlie Pierce

His blog on Esquire’s website should be required reading, for political wonks and journalists alike. His book, ““Idiot America” likewise. I mean, who else would refer to Gov. Scott Walker as a “goggle-eyed homunculus hired by Koch Industries to run their midwest subsidiary formerly known as the state of Wisconsin” He is what Hunter Thompson could have been if he’d focused on being a good journalist rather than a drug-soaked, wild-eyed counterculture icon. He’s also a very good sports writer when his attention’s on that subject.

In a recent post, Charlie points out that just about a quarter of people who express a negative opinion of the Affordable Care Act, a.k.a Obamacare, do so because they don’t think it goes far enough. That includes me, by the way. I think the ACA is an unnecessarily complex, Rube Goldbergian approach to covering the uninsured, but, hey, it’s a “market-based” approach born over at Heritage, so what does one expect? We coulda/shoulda just expanded Medicare to everyone. But it’s a step in the right direction.
