Harry Truman defeats Republican Thomas Dewey (future Chief Justice Earl Warren was his running mate) and (let’s not forget) Dixiecrat Strom Thurmond (who won four southern states), but the Chicago Tribune had already printed its headline.

However, the story behind the iconic photo, as with many other icons, is a little different.
