Gonna remember THIS one for a long time to come! Cardinals win in extra innings, 3-2, and Carlos Beltran is the main reason. He drives in all three runs, including smoking an RBI single to end it, and guns down Mark Ellis at home in the 10th.
When St. Louis signed Beltran (famous in Redbird history for being on the receiving end of Adam Wainwright’s iconic curve strike 3 with bases loaded in the bottom of the 9th in Game 7 of the 2006 NLCS), I thought, “why are they signing a slugger on the downside of his career?” Tonight was one very big reason. I have already become a fan, and what he did this evening was thrilling.
Pitching staff deserves kudos, as well. Joe Kelly hung tough after giving up 2 runs in the 2nd inning, shutting the Dodgers down the rest of the way. The relief corps kept them off the scoreboard for 7 more innings, with Lance Lynn throwing two lights-out innings to get the win.
Way to go, guys!
