Well, I didn’t exactly call it right. I thought Game 5, with Wainwright facing Cole, would be a classic pitchers’ duel, a la Carpenter v. Halladay in 2011. But the Redbirds got to Cole early, with David Freese launching a 2-run shot in the second inning.
Wainwright was tough, throwing 6 shutout innings. Only 3 dumb little singles, one of which caromed off first base, spoiled a real gem.
Matt Adams, providing needed punch in Allen Craig’s absence, also hit a 2-run homer. Defense, other than Pete Kozma’s goof in the 7th, was splendid.
After flirting with the Brink on Saturday, Cardinal pitching allowed only 2 runs in 18 innings. Not having Allen Craig in the lineup is still a disadvantage, and Matt Carpenter’s dreadful slump is a concern.
But, onward. Dodgers are in town, and Michael Wacha’s on the mound tomorrow night.
