50 Years Ago Today, Just a Few Minutes Ago, In Fact

Addie Mae Collins, Cynthia Wesley, Carole Robertson, and Denise McNair were killed when a bomb went off at the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. They were getting ready for Sunday school.

Denise Oliver Velez, writing at Daily Kos, has a thoughtful remembrance. Diane McWhorter, writing in the NY Times, asks why we haven’t done more.

I was the same age as they were. Of all the violence of those years, this act stays with me the most. NPR carried a story about the long path to justice for the murderers.

This past week, Congress awarded the four girls a Congressional Gold Medal.
