Cardinals sweep the Pirates with a 9-2 win behind a most impressive outing by young Michael Wacha, who threw 7 1/3 shutout innings, allowing 2 hits, giving up 2 walks and striking out 2. He also induced 2 inning-ending double plays. This follows throwing 6 shutout innings against Cincinnati, an effort spoiled when the club subsequently lost that game.
Offense scored big without the benefit of a single long ball (yay). Wacha actually had the most RBIs, 2, of anyone. 9th inning was sloppy, but Salas contained the damage.
Cardinals flipped the Pirates’ 1 1/2-game lead with this weekend’s sweep. Pittsburgh now faces Texas, while the Reds get the Cubs. Cards have a day off, then 16 in a row (!!) – 7 at home – before a one-day break and the final weekend series at home against the Cubs. The Cardinals only play one team – the Nationals – with a winning record between now and the end of the season, although the Cubs have been giving them fits of late. Cincinnati and Pittsburgh play each other 6 times in their last 9 games.
