Adam Wainwright was strong last night. He went all 9, struck out 9. allowed 6 hits and only 1 run. 21 first-pitch strikes and more than half the balls put into play were on the ground. He also helped himself with a run-scoring sacrifice fly. Frankly, I’m not thrilled his pitch count got so high (128), but if he’s “back,” then our October prospects are much better.
Cardinal fans watch Yadier Molina’s sore knee closely. Right now, he’s hot; since returning from the DL list August 15, he’s hitting .419, and more than half his hits have been for extra bases. The Cardinals are 6-1 in those games. He has also reclaimed the NL lead in hitting at .337.
Cards win, 3-1, remain a game behind. 34 to play, almost half of those against either the Bucs or the Reds. The next two weeks loom ever-larger. Westbrook, who’s been shelled lately, is on the DL with soreness in his back. Have to cobble together the rotation again.
