The Cardinals’ offense finally came through for Adam Wainwright. In the entire month of April, they scored a grand total of 2 runs while he was on the mound. Tonight, they staked him to a 1-0 lead in the first and built from there. Rafael Furcal hit his first home run of the season, a 2-run shot in the home half of the 7th. Matt Holliday went 3 for 5 with a solo shot, and while David Freese only had one hit all night, it was a 3-run homer.

Four errors did not help the Pirate cause.

Wainwright battled the whole way. He ended up pitching 7 innings, allowing 5 hits – 4 of them for extra bases and 2 of those home runs – and 4 earned runs while striking out 9. He got an impressive 17 first-pitch strikes against the 26 batters he faced, and most of what they hit stayed on the ground. Not vintage Wain-O, but enough to win.
