Lynn deals. (US Presswire)
After allowing an inside-the-park homer by Pirate lead-off hitter Alex Presley on his second pitch, Lance Lynn settled down and gave the Bucs only 3 other hits over the next 7 innings, striking out 4, walking 1, and generally keeping the ball on the ground. He’s now 3-0 and has provided a welcome lift in the absence of Chris Carpenter.
Unfortunately, that homer also ended up adding to the Cardinals’ injury problems. Center fielder Skip Schumaker hit the wall trying to get the ball and had to leave the game. He’d been called up early from a rehab assignment in Memphis to fill in for John Jay, who’s also on the DL.
Carlos Beltran went 2 for 4, scoring once and driving in a run. Yadier Molina went 1 for 4, a double in the 2nd that scored Beltran, who steamed all the way from first, and tied the game. Beltran’s RBI came in the 5th, and the Cards went up, 2-1. It stayed close until the top of the 9th, when Daniel Descalso hit his 1st career home run and Rafael Furcal doubled in pinch-hitter Shane Robinson to give closer Jason Motte some breathing space.
