The rookie reporters refer to as “the other Carpenter,” Matt Carpenter, had a memorable day at the plate, going 4 for 4 with a home run, a triple, and 5 RBIs, leading his team over the Cubs.

Yadier Molina, continuing his strong performance after re-signing this year, went 2 for 3 with a 3-run homer, 3 runs scored and 3 RBI.

Starter Jake Westbrook had a solid outing, going 7 innings, scattering 4 hits, allowing 1 earned run, and striking out 2 while walking 1. He threw 17 first-pitch strikes to the 26 batters he faced, and he got almost twice as many ground balls (11) as flies (6).

A day off, then the Reds come to town, and then off to Pittsburgh for the weekend and up to Wrigley.
