Game 1 to the Redbirds

Not a lot of fireworks tonight, but some sturdy pitching. Chris Carpenter wasn’t at his very best, but was pretty good, certainly good enough, scattering 5 hits over 6 innings and allowing 2 runs. The `pen did the job again, giving up only 1 hit over three innings of work. There was a moment of stress in the 7th, when the Rangers had runners on 1st and 2nd with only one out, but they shut the door.

Key hit was young Allen Craig, pinch-hitting for Carpenter in the bottom of the 6th. With 2 on and 2 out, he went the other way, singling to right and scoring David Freese, making it 3-2, and that’s how it stayed. Most of the big guns, on both sides, were pretty quiet this evening.

Yadier Molina delivered a message, though, throwing out Ian Kinsler trying to steal 2nd in the 1st inning.

The 9th saw a bit of drama; with 1 out, Adrian Beltre hit a ball that he claimed bounced off his foot for a foul. The ball wandered to 3rd base, and even though Beltre didn’t run, Daniel Descalso picked it up and threw to first for the out. Replay apparently seemed to show the ump blew the call.

Jaime Garcia v. Colby Lewis tomorrow night. Hope the weather’s better.
