Current read – Philip Dray’s “There is Power in a Union”

I read a lot about how the economic fortunes of ordinary Americans have declined as union power has waned, beginning with Reagan’s attack on PATCO. As a former union member who has held cards in the Machinists, Grain Millers, and Newspaper Guild (local VP), and who has been on the receiving end twice of the economic blows dealt to this country by the business sector, I heartily recommend this book. There is a bumper sticker that says, “Unions: The people who brought you the weekend.” Dray’s book makes a case that unions helped bring us the middle class.
